Emeco was challenged to create an exact replica of the classic aluminum 1006 Navy ® Chair out of rPET from Coca-Cola’s own recycling plant in Spartanburg South Carolina USA. The molding facility is about an hour away in North Carolina USA – chosen for its close proximity to the material supply. We worked with BASF on the combination of rPET; Glass Fiber and pigment t make sure it was structurally sound, fire-proof and UV fade resistant. The final mixture is about 65% post consumer rPET and 35% glass fiber and pigment. Each chair uses at least 111 plastic beverage bottles. We also had to make sure each plastic color passed Coke’s internal sustainability review – and eliminated all metals from the colors.
We found that our clients wanted their constituents to know more about sustainable products they invested in - so we molded the recycling story under the seat, and used the recycling mark on the injection exhaust cap on the back of the chair.
The 111 Navy Chair ® is about half the price of our aluminum version and is completely recyclable into new chairs.
